• Phone Karen McFarlane (B.A, B.Ed.-art, Visual Arts Diploma) I have always been interested in art, especially in depicting trees, roots, and rocks, or in figure drawing. I took all the art courses I could while in high school and in university. As a young mother in Beaverlodge, I was lucky enough to be able to join the Tuesday evening classes at Euphemia (Betty) McNaught’s. Betty was a fantastic teacher and an inspiration to anybody who came under her mentorship. I taught Art at the Beaverlodge High School for several years. Then I completed the Visual Arts Diploma at the Grande Prairie Regional College in 1987 and moved there, where I worked with the Grande Prairie art group that met weekly at the library. In 1988, three friends and I had a show at the Prairie Art Gallery titled “Paint in the Soup.” It was about trying to balance our art and our home-making while raising children. Subsequent to that we had shows together in several Alberta galleries over the years. When I moved to Whitecourt in 2002, I began working with the Society of Whitecourt Arts Council (SWAC) group. I taught drawing and participated in group shows as well as mounting a solo show at ARTickles Gallery. I also worked with a group in Peers. After moving to Edmonton in 2013, I became a member of the Harcourt House Gallery and went weekly to the figure-drawing drop-in studio. I had a solo show at the Muttart Conservatory in 2015 and joined the Edmonton Art Club in 2018. While in Edmonton, I taught drawing and watercolor classes at the Cloverdale Community Center. Now, I work primarily in pastel. I use my own source photographs. I still like scenery, trees and rocks especially. I also do some portraiture and some extreme close-ups that look somewhat abstract. I attend the Tuesday drop-in studio sessions at The Vernon Art and Community Center and also the Thursday drop-in studio sessions at the Schubert Centre. I am a member of the Vertigo Gallery. |
