Lois was born and raised in the Okanagan. She received her Bachelor of Education at UBC and taught for 37 years in elementary. She especially enjoyed teaching art and tried to choose projects where each child could succeed as well as learn the principals of art in every subject... especially Math! Her students most remember her “power of the pencil” units and self portrait lessons. Young kids live in the moment… draw and paint in the moment. They are flexible and ready to try anything. They do not have the hangups or self doubt adults do about expression in art.

Lois began painting in Grade 11 with oils, inspired by her art teacher and classmates. She has taken many courses over the years from drawing techniques, pen and ink, watercolours, acrylics and oils. Although she keeps coming back to oils, she has definitely been inspired by the Australian aboriginal dot art in acrylic. “I watched two Aboriginal artists on the beach for hours at Tweedshead on the Gold Coast. In our discussions, we compared their art to the geometric designs of Ukrainian Easter Egg painting I have done all my life.”

Doing dot art is so very relaxing and therapeutic. It is a great way to warm up to the visual and perceptual thinking of the right brain.

If I were an able painter
I would splash the hues and cluttered images
Upon the busy canvas of my life
